Who is Minitab Real-Time SPC for?

Quality teams evaluating browser-based production monitoring with defined operator and engineering roles. An internet connection is an explicit requirement for the assessed browser workflow. Statistical validity is not automatic: chart type, rational subgrouping, sampling frequency, control-limit basis, special-cause tests, distribution choice and specification/action limits require competent governance and measurement-system validation. Out-of-control, out-of-specification and out-of-action are distinct conditions and must not be merged into one generic alert. Automatic collection depends on a Minitab Connect table; API streaming is limited to continuous process/output measures and returns successful and failed record counts that the integration must reconcile. Real-Time SPC archives data out of the app to Connect, by default after 90 days with a configurable 1-365-day setting, so in-app reporting range, retention and connected-product entitlement need explicit design. Edited observations recalculate points, tests and metrics, while prior assignable causes/corrective actions can remain after a flag disappears; require audit-history and approval evidence. Alerts notify users but do not prove acknowledgement, containment or closed-loop CAPA. Role defaults are configurable, and access to a station can expose related process information within a group, so least-privilege testing is essential. Product-specific pricing and trial entitlement are not publicly established.

Consider Minitab Real-Time SPC when browser-based monitoring and distinct operations/engineering roles fit the plant. Prove the source-to-station data path and an agreed response to connection loss before rollout.

    Capabilities and scope

This profile covers Minitab Real-Time SPC, the cloud/browser process-monitoring product. Minitab Connect is used for automatic collection and archived quality data, while Minitab Statistical Software is positioned for deeper analysis; neither should be assumed commercially included unless the proposal says so. A station shown as offline inside the application is a station state, not proof that the Real-Time SPC browser can collect data without internet access.

Variable and attribute control chartsDocumented by vendor

The published feature list identifies I-MR, XBar-R, XBar-S and I-MR-R/S charts, plus P, NP, C, U and Laney attribute charts with applicable Nelson tests. Buyers should still validate chart selection, rational subgrouping and rule configuration with their own process data.

Normal and non-normal capability analysisDocumented by vendor

The feature page lists capability analysis for normal and non-normal data. Distribution choice, process stability, measurement-system adequacy and the basis of specification limits remain buyer-governed validation decisions.

Sampling plans, forms and collection orderDocumented by vendor

Sampling plans define required measures, use a standard form or configurable check sheet, and can be scheduled, on demand or required at startup. Instructions and collection order can be configured for the operator workflow.

Sampling-plan forms, schedules and collection order
Manual, gage, Connect and API collection pathsDepends on scope

Official documentation distinguishes manual entry, gage collection, automatic collection from one Minitab Connect table and API streaming. Calculated measures are available with form or gage collection, not automatic or streaming collection; confirm device middleware, Connect entitlement and supported measure type per sampling plan.

Manual, gage, Connect and streaming collection methods
Station API streaming and reconciliationDepends on scope

The API uses a key, base URL and endpoint. The station streaming endpoint is documented for continuous process and output measures, with up to 50 subgroups and 1,000 observations per request and separate success and failure counts. The buyer integration must preserve timestamps and descriptors, reconcile partial success and make retries idempotent.

Role-based access and portalsDepends on scope

Administrator, Engineer, Supervisor and Operator roles and configurable permissions are documented. Access assignments can expose related product and process information through group and station relationships, so least-privilege behavior must be tested with representative accounts.

Station and role-dependent dashboardsDocumented by vendor

The support library lists station, operator, supervisor and engineering views, including current-performance and process-quality summaries. Availability depends on the user's role and assigned access; dashboard output does not replace validation of the underlying chart configuration.

Configurable email and text notificationsDepends on scope

Users can subscribe by product, process, station or tag and choose email, text or both, with individual or daily delivery for documented event types. Confirm carrier and regional delivery, escalation, acknowledgement and ownership because a notification is not a closed-loop CAPA record.

Distinct control, specification, action and entry exceptionsDocumented by vendor

The station dashboard distinguishes out-of-control from out-of-specification conditions. Data-entry documentation separately describes specification warnings and absolute limits that can reject a manual value or convert an imported value to missing. Buyers should configure and route these conditions separately.

Observation and descriptor correctionDepends on scope

Authorized edits rerun plotted points, statistical tests and summary metrics. Previously assigned causes and corrective actions can remain when an edit removes the original flag, so regulated buyers should require an immutable before-and-after history, approvals and reconciliation evidence rather than infer them from recalculation alone.

    Observation edits and statistical recalculation
Assignable-cause and corrective-action contextDocumented by vendor

Station and editing guidance describes recording assignable causes, corrective actions and comments around flagged data. This operational context should not be represented as a complete quality-event, approval or CAPA system unless the proposed workflow demonstrates those controls.

CSV and Minitab worksheet exportDocumented by vendor

The station dashboard supports export of the selected period to CSV and Minitab worksheet format. Validate identifiers, timestamps, units, descriptors, limits, exception context and maximum export range against records and downstream analysis requirements.

Request a Real-Time SPC-specific quote for users and roles, stations, data sources, implementation, retention and support. The general Minitab pricing page lists other subscriptions and directs real-time monitoring enquiries to sales; those amounts and free-trial offers are not assigned to this product. Confirm any Connect or Statistical Software entitlement separately.

Pricing sources checked : Partially verified. Product features, system requirements, station documentation and the general pricing page were reviewed.

Which product scope should the quote cover?

Cloud Real-Time SPC monitoring, sampling, role-based dashboards, notifications, data-entry/streaming and exports; Minitab Connect, Statistical Software and implementation services require explicit entitlement and integration scope.

Ask the vendor to identify the product, region, modules, billing unit, contract term and included services in writing.

    Offline work and integrations

The official Real-Time SPC system requirements explicitly require an internet connection and list Chrome or Chromium Edge. This is classified as connection required for the assessed browser workflow. A station marked offline in the application is not evidence of disconnected browser data capture.

    Demo script

Demo exercise: independently validated chart and exception routing

    1. Prepare an independently calculated dataset containing stable variation, a Nelson-rule signal, a specification-only breach, an action-limit breach and an absolute-limit data-entry error.
    2. Configure the proposed chart, rational subgroup, sampling frequency, historical parameters, limits and tests under an authorized engineering account.
    3. Compare every plotted value, control limit, capability result and exception classification with the independent reference.
    4. Demonstrate that each condition reaches the intended role with its required instruction, ownership, acknowledgement and disposition evidence.

Demo exercise: mixed collection and API reconciliation

    1. Map representative measures to manual form, check sheet, gage, Connect automatic collection and API streaming, including one measure type that the proposed method does not support.
    2. Stream a controlled API request containing valid and invalid observations, timestamps and descriptors near the documented subgroup and observation limits.
    3. Reconcile the returned success and failure counts, correct the failures and retry without creating duplicate subgroups or losing source timestamps.
    4. Compare the source, station dashboard, Connect path where applicable, and exported CSV or worksheet record by record.

Demo exercise: correction, recalculation and retained context

    1. Create a flagged observation and record an assignable cause, corrective action and comment under the proposed operator or supervisor role.
    2. Have an authorized user change the observation and one descriptor, then verify the chart, tests and summary statistics are recalculated.
    3. Confirm whether the original signal disappears and whether its cause and corrective-action context remains, as described by the official guidance.
    4. Inspect and export the immutable before-and-after values, actor, timestamp, reason and approval; record any missing audit or approval control as a deployment gap.

Ask the vendor to show you

    1. Which Real-Time SPC, Connect and Statistical Software licences, roles, stations, environments, storage, implementation and support are included?
    2. Can we reproduce an independently calculated control chart using identical timestamps, units, subgroup IDs, limits and special-cause rules?
    3. Who approves chart type, rational subgrouping, sampling frequency, historical parameters and recalculation of control limits?
    4. How are out-of-control, out-of-specification, out-of-action and absolute-limit data-entry errors distinguished and routed?
    5. Which sampling plans use manual forms, check sheets, gages, Connect automatic collection or API streaming, and why?
    6. How does the API integration reconcile partial success, retry safely, preserve timestamps and prevent duplicate subgroups?

    Questions the sources answer

Can the Real-Time SPC browser workflow operate without internet?

The official system requirements require an internet connection. Agree procedures for outages and for any separately buffered source data.

    Can station data be exported?

Station documentation describes CSV and Minitab worksheet (MWX) exports for the selected date range. Test the fields and coverage needed for your records.

    Which data-collection methods are documented?

Minitab documents manual entry, forms or check sheets, gage collection, automatic collection from one Connect table and station API streaming. Eligibility varies by measure type, and calculated measures are not supported by automatic or streaming collection.

Are out-of-control and out-of-specification the same event?

No. Official station guidance presents them as different exceptions; action-limit events and absolute-limit entry errors are also separate. Configure routing and disposition for each condition.

What happens after an observation is edited?

The plotted point, tests and summary statistics are recalculated. Existing assignable causes or corrective actions can remain even when the edited point no longer exceeds a limit, so validate audit history and approval behavior.
