Which requirements should drive the decision?

Editorial interpretation of the linked vendor documentation, checked . These priorities and demo tasks are recommendations; no comparative product test was performed.

    Consider Sphera when…

    • A multi-site programme needs coordinated incident reporting, including anonymous options, and action ownership with escalation.
    • Management of change reviews and approvals are in scope, and a named team will configure and govern the enterprise processes.
    Published scope

First Report accepts events and observations, with an anonymous reporting option. Actions describes assignment, approaching-due reminders and overdue escalation; the MOC application describes predefined workflows, centralised reviews and approvals, status reporting and history. Offline capture is documented for behaviour-based safety observations only. Environmental Accounting, Corporate Sustainability and LCA are separate purchasing scopes, and permits and isolations belong to the separately profiled Sphera Control of Work. A Health and Safety free trial was not verified; the 45-day LCA for Experts trial is not an EHS trial.

    Consider Enablon when…

    • Field findings must reach plant-risk and work-control decisions such as permits, isolations and simultaneous operations.
    • Offline inspections with action-plan creation are part of the frontline requirement, and you can fund integration and configuration ownership.
    Published scope

Permit to Work, Isolation Management and Operational Risk Assessment sit within Control of Work; Simultaneous Operations adds risk warnings and oversight, but warnings do not establish automatic conflict resolution. Enablon Go documents offline incidents, observations and inspections with checklists, comments and action plans. Enablon Hub is integration tooling, not a turnkey connector. Our evidence records no management-of-change application, and offline permit authorisation is not established.

Run these three tasks in both demos

    1. Report a near miss with the intended reporting role, then capture a record offline and reconnect.

Acceptance evidence: For Sphera, show an anonymous First Report and which roles can identify the reporter, then capture a behaviour-based observation offline and ask separately about incidents and approvals. For Enablon, complete an inspection offline and show the synchronised server record with attachments and action ownership.

    2. Assign an action and let it go overdue, then run a change request with a missing approval.

Acceptance evidence: Inspect the escalation, reject a proposed correction and export the history. For Sphera, show what the configured MOC workflow prevents; for Enablon, identify the application that would hold the change, and record it as open scope if none is named.

    3. If permits are in scope, introduce a maintenance job with overlapping work and changed isolation information.

Acceptance evidence: For Enablon, show who can authorise, reject or stop progression in the quoted Control of Work applications. For Sphera, ask for the separate Control of Work product to be quoted and demonstrated. Offline permit authorisation was not established for either.

    Keep the decision open if…

Keep the decision open if a demonstrated step belongs to an unquoted application, such as Sphera Control of Work or a separate sustainability product, or if PHA studies such as HAZOP or LOPA are required and neither vendor has shown them. Neither vendor's reviewed pages establish ISO 45001 certification support, OSHA PSM or Seveso compliance, CSRD coverage, an implementation timeline or a contract term.

    Align the proposals

Map each demonstrated step to a named application and get the first-year cost in writing. Ask Sphera to quote named applications, users, implementation, datasets, migration, interfaces, support and renewal; ask Enablon to list applications, sites, user roles, mobile access, integration services and implementation. Name the implementation party and the owner of each interface after go-live.

    Where the two scopes differ

The guide above summarises an emphasis difference. The records add three concrete ones. First, offline: the Sphera record documents offline observation capture in its behaviour-based safety app and no complete matrix for incidents, approvals or other applications, while Enablon Go is documented for disconnected incidents, observations and inspections, listing checklists, comments and the creation of action plans. Neither record shows offline permit or approval decisions.

Second, process hazard analysis. The Sphera record documents the PHA-Pro tool with study templates, worksheets and recommendation tracking for methods including HAZOP and LOPA; the Enablon record describes a cloud analysis solution integrated with its bow-tie and barrier tools and asks you to confirm methods, migration and version compatibility. Third, interfaces: Enablon names a hub and development kit, which the record does not treat as a turnkey connector, while the Sphera record lists interfaces as something to name in the quote.

On trial and price the two are alike. Neither publishes an amount, and neither record verifies a trial. The Sphera record adds that an advertised 45-day trial for a life cycle assessment product is not an EHS trial.

When each is the safer first demo

    Start with Sphera when

Sphera is the safer first demo when the first requirement is coordinated incident intake across sites, including anonymous reports, with action ownership and escalation, and when a named team will govern the configuration. Keep the demo on the Health and Safety applications and ask for every sustainability or life cycle item to be shown separately.

    Start with Enablon when

Enablon is the safer first demo when frontline inspections must reach plant-risk decisions such as permits, isolations or overlapping work. Ask for the Control of Work application and the overlapping-work scenario by name, and have offline inspection shown in Enablon Go before anything else, because that is the part the record documents.

    A two-week evaluation plan

    Ask Sphera

    • List the named applications, users, interfaces, content subscriptions and migration in the quote.
    • Ask which mobile use cases beyond behavioural observation work offline, and in what package.

    Ask Enablon

    • List the applications, sites, roles, mobile access, integration work and implementation as separate lines, and say who owns each interface after go-live.
    • Ask which Control of Work and process safety applications are licensed, with version numbers for any bow-tie integration.

Week 1, field capture. In each, prepare the app, capture an observation offline with an attachment, reconnect, and check the received record, then create an action. In Enablon Go also complete an inspection with a checklist. In Sphera ask what happens to an incident entered offline, since only observations are documented. Neither record verifies a trial, so request a vendor-run environment on the quoted applications.

Week 2, governance. For Sphera, run an anonymous report through to an escalated overdue action, and a change request through its review and approval. For Enablon, run a conflicting-work scenario and check what the warning does and who decides. If process hazard analysis is in scope, ask each to run one study with your facilitator and track its recommendations to closure.

What the records do not establish

    Sphera

    • A subscription amount, or any Health and Safety trial.
    • Offline incidents, approvals or other applications.
    • That life cycle, environmental accounting or corporate sustainability products are part of a safety subscription.

    Enablon

    • A subscription amount, minimum users or contract term.
    • Offline permit, isolation, change or barrier decisions.
    • A turnkey connector for your systems.
    • That an overlapping-work warning resolves a conflict automatically.

    Neither product

    • ISO 45001 support, OSHA process safety or Seveso compliance, CSRD coverage, or an implementation timeline.
    • A hands-on result for either product.

Written from the profile records and the decision guide above, not from a hands-on test. Where a record is silent, the page says so instead of filling the gap.

    Sphera vs Enablon | FAQ

Can Sphera or Enablon replace a standalone PHA tool?
Not on the evidence reviewed. Sphera lists a risk assessment application and Enablon lists process-safety and operational-risk applications, but neither record establishes HAZOP, LOPA or other PHA study workflows. Ask each vendor to run a study with recommendations tracked to closure before retiring a specialist tool.
    Which product is cheaper?
Comparable total cost has not been established. Request the same applications, users, sites, configuration, migration, integrations and support period from both vendors. Published entry pricing is subject to the plan conditions shown in each profile.
How should I compare offline capability?
Use the exact proposed mobile application and plan. Download required data, disconnect, create a record with a photo, reconnect and inspect synchronization. Record which preparation and tasks require connectivity.
How should I decide between these products?
Set acceptance criteria for your actual workflow. Complete the same demo, record observed results separately from vendor statements and resolve remaining questions in a scoped pilot. The linked profiles show the sources and review status for each product.
