Where the two scopes differ
The two records start from different objects. Fieldwire's is the drawing: tasks, photographs, checklists and forms sit on a plan sheet, so a finding has a location and a revision. HammerTech's is the worker and the site: orientations, credential review, permits, pre-task plans and inspections, with subcontractor access arranged by the general contractor. A buyer can ask Fieldwire where a defect is and on which revision it was raised. The question the HammerTech record is built around is whether a named worker has been oriented and approved before starting. The Fieldwire record says it is not an enterprise EHS suite, and the HammerTech record lists no drawing management.
The commercial shapes are nearly opposite. Fieldwire publishes per-user prices by tier (the dollar display shows 39, 64 and 89 per user per month for Pro, Business and Business Plus on annual billing, plus a free Basic tier), and its record warns that inviting a contractor can add a charge to the account owner, since the project owner pays for invited users unless they already hold qualifying paid access. HammerTech publishes no amount, says it does not price per user, and says the general contractor provides access so that subcontractors buy no licence. For a general contractor with rotating subcontractors the question therefore differs. With Fieldwire it is how many invited people become billable and for how long. With HammerTech it is what volume, site and onboarding assumptions the quote makes, and what the contract says about renewal and scope change.
Forms and disconnected work are treated differently. Fieldwire's custom forms, with statuses, signatures, calculations and plan links, sit in Business and Business Plus, and task checklists keep a timestamp for each checked item but are not refreshed when a template is edited. Offline use is documented for downloaded projects on iOS and Android, including new tasks and forms, after a prior login. HammerTech's offline claim is narrower: the Inspect app, for inspections and issues, with no offline matrix found for permits, pre-task plans or orientation approval. Neither record shows a control that blocks work. Fieldwire's two signature routes (typing another person's name on site, or exporting a PDF for an offsite signer) do not establish identity assurance, and HammerTech's orientation records do not establish competence for a task.

When each is the safer first demo
Start with Fieldwire by Hilti when
Fieldwire is the safer first demo when the loss happens between a drawing revision and the crew's instruction. Upload a fictional revised sheet with an ambiguous number, resolve the conflict, then place a checklist and a Business-tier form on it and complete both on two phones. Invite a short-term subcontractor in the same session and ask to see the billing effect, since the record names invited-user charges as a main cost risk.
Start with HammerTech when
HammerTech is the safer first demo when the loss happens at the gate. Have a worker submit an orientation with a credential deliberately missing, have the reviewer reject and then approve it, and ask for one named worker's orientation, credential, permit and pre-task plan as a single export. Ask the vendor to say which of the steps work with no connection, because the record documents that for Inspect only.
A two-week evaluation plan
Ask Fieldwire by Hilti
- Name the tier for each form, report and export you need, and state the roles, projects and invited contractors assumed, so that overage and invited-user charges can be estimated.
- Ask what API, SSO, onboarding and storage-sync arrangements cost, and whether the limited 14-day Business beta, offered to eligible new accounts in the US or Canada, applies to you.
Ask HammerTech
- Ask for the quote assumptions in writing: annual construction volume, company size, active sites, onboarding and support, billing term, renewal treatment and what happens if volume changes mid-term.
- Ask for named connectors, any hardware such as the Irongate gate arrangement and its data responsibilities, and how a subcontractor's worker records can be retrieved after exit and after your contract ends.
Week 1, the field record. For Fieldwire, download a test project to two phones, replace a plan sheet with an ambiguous revision, complete a task checklist and a Business form offline on each phone, then reconnect them in sequence with a form permission changed in between. Record duplicates, stale content and the final record. For HammerTech, have a test worker submit an orientation with one missing credential, have a reviewer reject and then approve it, and try a permit, a pre-task plan and an orientation with the device offline, listing what is blocked. The Fieldwire trial is limited and the HammerTech record establishes none, so request a vendor environment first.
Week 2, everyone else who touches the record. In Fieldwire, invite a short-term subcontractor, see the billing effect, and test both signature routes for a person without an account against your own acceptance rule. In HammerTech, restrict an external supervisor to one project, trace an Insights trend to its source records, then demobilise a test subcontractor and export one worker's history with signatures and audit trail. If you record injuries for OSHA, ask HammerTech to produce the 300 log, 300A and submission file from existing records, and ask Fieldwire which process would produce them, since its record shows none.
What the records do not establish
Fieldwire by Hilti
- That the 14-day Business beta is available beyond eligible new US or Canada accounts.
- Identity assurance or electronic-signature compliance for the sign-as-someone-else and exported PDF routes.
- A complete incident, occupational health, compliance-obligation or ESG suite, or permit and orientation workflows.
- The price and scope of API, SSO and storage-sync arrangements, which the record says are discussed separately.
HammerTech
- A subscription amount, contract term or renewal formula, or any automatic re-rating by construction volume.
- Offline permit, pre-task-plan or orientation decisions.
- Completed OSHA 300 and 300A outputs and the electronic submission file, and which steps are manual.
- A full-platform trial, or a deployed connection to your own systems.
Neither product
- That a completed form, checked item, signature or orientation proves competence or safe completion of the work.
- Which product reduces incidents or rework: no outcome data was reviewed.
- Any hands-on result: both records are reviews of vendor documentation.
