Where the two scopes differ
The records start from different places. The Onspring record describes a configurable no-code governance, risk and compliance platform with incident, risk register and internal audit products, and says outright that the reviewed material does not establish a specialist frontline EHS suite, a disconnected inspection app, permit to work or chemical inventory. The Riskonnect record describes a portfolio spanning health and safety, insurable risk, governance and resilience, and concentrates on Health & Safety and its link to claims. Its safety page lists incident intake, investigation, corrective follow-up, permit to work, contractor and chemical features and OSHA recordability and submission, with the record asking buyers to confirm which modules are purchased. One record describes a platform that a team configures into a safety process, and the other a safety product with claims and risk families beside it.
Both are bought by quote, with different structures. Onspring publishes the licensing structure without rates: user, product or hybrid licences, separate from Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum platform levels. Its pricing page shows what the levels change, such as a non-production environment and 1,000 text messages a month from Silver, database refreshes and firewall rule changes from Gold, and the highest storage, API calls and round-the-clock support at Platinum. Product licensing includes unlimited employee users for the selected products, but the record says that does not extend to external users, and Onspring AI needs its own licence from Silver upward. Riskonnect says price depends on project size, complexity and customisation, and its implementation page describes Essentials, Pro Configuration and Tailored Configuration, with typical timelines the vendor gives as under two months, two to six months and four months or more. Neither record shows a numeric subscription.
The documented records overlap on incidents and diverge around them. For Onspring the record lists severity-based incident routing, root-cause tracking with closure verification, risk registers with key risk indicators, audit workpapers with sign-off, surveys and attestations, dashboards, and an external-auditor portal that needs the right entitlement. For Riskonnect it lists safety analytics, regulatory reporting, risk assessment and treatment planning, operational risk governance, compliance obligations and claims processing, noting that several of these may be separate licences rather than part of Health & Safety. The Riskonnect record does not describe audit workpapers or audit-universe planning, and the Onspring record does not describe claims. Those are statements about what was reviewed, not about the products. The Onspring record stresses that no-code configuration reduces coding dependency but still needs design ownership, change control, testing and administrator capacity, and the Riskonnect record asks buyers to agree deliverables and acceptance criteria before choosing an implementation approach. In each case the quote should say who carries that effort.
Field use and assurance are open on both sides. Each record says the reviewed sources do not establish offline capture or synchronisation, and the Riskonnect record warns against transferring an offline claim from another Riskonnect product. Onspring lists native integrations, some needing a third-party content subscription, with API capacity tied to the platform level; Riskonnect separates API guidance by product family. On security statements, the Onspring record lists SOC 2 Type II, CSA STAR Level 1 and a FedRAMP entry that applies to its GovCloud service only, none reviewed, while the Riskonnect record lists no certification, which is not evidence that none exists.

When each is the safer first demo
Start with Onspring when
Onspring is the safer first demo when the first requirement is a governance process that has to be configured: an incident routed by severity into root cause, a finding linked to its audit, evidence, control and risk, and an administrator changing a workflow without code. Ask the vendor to name the platform level and licensing model first, and to show the change in a non-production environment, since environments are a function of the level.
Start with Riskonnect when
Riskonnect is the safer first demo when the first requirement is the safety team's own record and its handoff to claims or risk: an event, an investigation, corrective actions, and what moves into a claim. Ask the vendor to name the modules and claims scope in the quote, and which implementation approach would deliver your configuration, then check who on the safety side can open restricted financial or personal claim data.
A two-week evaluation plan
Ask Onspring
- Name the products, the licensing model, the platform level, the environments and the storage, SMS and API allowances in one quote, and say which implementation work is included and who owns future administration.
- Say which integrations are native and included, which need a third-party subscription, and whether external auditors or suppliers need a portal entitlement.
Ask Riskonnect
- Name the Health & Safety modules and claims licences, say whether risk assessment and compliance obligations are inside them or separate, and state what Essentials, Pro Configuration and Tailored Configuration deliver for you.
- State which API or interface covers the product you would actually buy, who delivers and maintains it, and what happens to a failed import.
Week 1, the central process. Run one incident from intake through routing, root cause, corrective action and verified closure in each product, then export the audit history. In Onspring, link the result to a risk and control without duplicating records. In Riskonnect, create the proposed claims handoff and reconcile the shared fields. Neither record establishes a free trial, so agree a vendor-run environment, test roles and dates in writing before the clock starts.
Week 2, access, change and the field. Test what an unrelated user, an outside reviewer and a safety user can open in each. In Onspring, add a field and a conditional approval in a non-production environment, run permission and regression cases and promote the change. In Riskonnect, simulate a failed interface import and ask who owns recovery. Put each intended field task in airplane mode and write down which fail, then price three years on the same assumptions.
Worked evaluation scenarios
These scenarios are hypothetical. They show how to turn the record facts into a demo test and what outcome would change a choice; they are not case studies or customer results.
Hypothetical: an audit team that wants safety findings in its annual plan
An internal audit team wants a safety audit, its findings and the remediation in the same plan as its other audits, with an outside reviewer able to see only that audit. The Onspring record documents audit-universe planning, workpapers, multi-level sign-off, findings and an external-auditor portal whose entitlement and licensing must be confirmed. The Riskonnect record documents safety audits with corrective actions inside Health & Safety, and treats safety risk assessment and compliance obligations as scope that may need a separate licence. Run a sample audit with one failed item through remediation in each product, then log in as the outside reviewer. If the reviewer sees other records, or the plan view sits in a module outside the quote, the scope has to be renegotiated.
Hypothetical: a quote the board wants compared before the next meeting
A board asks for a three-year cost of each option, and the buyer has 300 employee users, 20 contractor users, two integrations and one test environment. The Onspring record describes user, product or hybrid licensing, with platform levels that carry different storage, SMS, environment and API allowances, and says unlimited employee users do not extend to external users. The Riskonnect record says price depends on project size, complexity and customisation, with three implementation approaches. Send both vendors the same assumptions and ask for year-one and year-three totals with licences, platform level or implementation, environments and renewals on separate lines. If an allowance forces a higher level, or Tailored Configuration is needed, the first quote will not predict the second.
Hypothetical: an injury that needs both a safety investigation and an insurer notice
A worker is injured, the safety team must investigate within days and the risk manager must pass details to an insurer. The Riskonnect record describes claims handling with assignment, reserves, settlement and closure, and says that capability needs the appropriate claims scope, with its demo exercise checking that safety users cannot open restricted claim information. The Onspring record documents incident routing, root-cause analysis and closure verification, with integrations and API capacity that depend on the platform level, and describes no claims function. Enter the same event in each, complete the investigation, and produce what the insurer needs. In Onspring, ask how the data would leave and who builds that interface. If the handoff needs custom development or a third-party subscription, price it into the comparison.
What the records do not establish
Onspring
- A numeric subscription price, a free trial, or the currency of any amount.
- Offline form capture or synchronisation, inspections, permit to work or chemical inventory.
- That a native connector is included, or that FedRAMP wording for GovCloud applies to the standard service.
- That unlimited employee users extend to external users or to every product.
Riskonnect
- A numeric Health & Safety subscription, a free trial, or any listed certification.
- Any offline Health & Safety task, or how a failed upload is resolved.
- Whether safety assessment and compliance obligations sit inside a Health & Safety licence.
- Internal-audit workpapers or audit-universe planning in the reviewed material.
Neither product
- Which platform is cheaper or faster to deploy: the records give cost drivers, not amounts.
- Implementation time, maintenance effort or customer satisfaction. Neither record uses independent customer reviews.
- Any hands-on result: both records review vendor documentation.
