Where the two scopes differ
Both records describe a carbon inventory across all three scopes, but the buying model differs. The Normative pricing page offers two packages by quotation, names value chain engagement and reduction planning in the summary of the higher one, and puts a catalogue of purchasable consultancy beside it: managed inventory work, CSRD and CDP support, assurance preparation and target setting. The Persefoni pricing page compares a self-service free plan with a proposal-based one and lists support in separate rows, among them concierge onboarding, a dedicated climate expert, a customer success manager and professional services, some marked as add-ons.
The evidence trail is described in different words. Normative documents a hybrid calculation method that blends transaction, activity and supplier data, an audit export listing factor sources, conversion factors and inflation corrections, and an event history for each data point. Persefoni describes formula, conversion and factor views per calculation and a ledger, but several of those controls carry coming-soon labels, so the gap lies in what is confirmed live. For an external reviewer, Normative offers a service that works with the buyer's chosen assurance provider, and Persefoni's regulatory page says such providers can be given platform access. Neither statement is evidence of an assurance outcome.
Security evidence also differs. The Normative record lists no certification, although a Normative FAQ states ISO 27001:2022 certification and its security whitepaper is offered as a download. The Persefoni pricing and trust material names SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II plus ISO 27001 and 27017, and shows an ISO/IEC 42001 badge without a certificate; no report was reviewed. A listing, or its absence from a record, does not show the state of a vendor's controls, so ask for the documents.

When each is the safer first demo
Start with Normative when
Normative is the safer first demo when internal capacity is the constraint and the proposal mixes software with advice. Ask for the included advisory allocation in writing, then watch what the named adviser, the analysts who check uploaded files and any purchased consultancy each do in one cycle.
Start with Persefoni when
Persefoni is the safer first demo when a single analyst wants to start unaided and learn what a free account delivers. Load a month of data, note each point where help was needed, and ask whether the in-app assistant, the help centre or paid concierge support covers it.
A two-week evaluation plan
Ask Normative
- What is the split between included adviser time and purchased consultancy, in hours and named deliverables, and is CSRD scope an add-on?
- Which entity contracts, and which products and pricing pages carry over after the announced merger?
Ask Persefoni
- Which support rows belong to the plan you would buy, and which are paid additions such as concierge onboarding?
- Can you see the current SOC and ISO documents, the scope of the ISO/IEC 42001 badge, and how an assurance provider is given access?
Week 1: use one sample in both, a month of purchased goods and one site's energy data. Time each step where you needed help and note who gave it: prompts, a vendor adviser or your own analyst. In Normative, record what file checks reject and what analyst review catches; in Persefoni, record what the free account refuses. The records show no verified trial, so Normative needs a vendor-run environment.
Week 2: play the reviewer. For one Scope 3 category, ask each vendor for what an external reviewer would receive: inputs, factors, conversions and change history. Pull Normative's audit export and event history; request Persefoni's calculation view and activity log in an account where they are live. Then price the support you actually used, line by line, in both proposals.
Worked evaluation scenarios
These scenarios are hypothetical. They show how to turn the record facts into a demo test and what outcome would change a choice; they are not case studies or customer results.
Hypothetical: a 90-person engineering firm with nobody who has run an inventory
An engineering firm has no sustainability staff and a first reporting deadline. The Normative record says each account includes a named adviser, while its pricing materials list consultancy and managed inventory services as separate purchases. The Persefoni record describes a self-service plan at no charge, with concierge support as a paid upgrade. Run the same first inventory task in both and log hours of internal time against hours of vendor time. Ask Normative what the included advice covers after onboarding, and Persefoni what concierge help adds. If the included advice ends after the first cycle, or the paid help costs more than the difference in licence, the comparison changes.
Hypothetical: an assurance provider asks for calculation evidence
An assurance provider asks for the evidence behind purchased-goods emissions: inputs, factors, conversions and who changed what. Normative's pricing page describes an audit export that lists factor sources, conversion factors and inflation corrections, plus an event history. The Persefoni record describes calculation traceability with release qualifications, and its regulatory page says assurance providers can be given platform access. Ask each vendor to produce the evidence for one line item and to create a reviewer user, so you can see exactly what that user can open. If the reviewer can only see screens that you must capture by hand, or the control is labelled coming soon, count the missing step as manual work.
Hypothetical: signing a three-year term while a merger is pending
A procurement team must sign a multi-year order, and the Normative record notes that the merger with Greenly does not establish a single subscription, a migration duty or feature parity. Ask the vendor to write into the order form what stays unchanged if the product is renamed or moved, the notice given before any migration and who owns the data export. Meanwhile Persefoni's pricing FAQ says sign-up is self-service with no credit card or procurement paperwork, so the same sample data can be loaded there while terms are agreed. If the vendor cannot commit to the scope in writing, treat the roadmap as a statement of intent and shorten the term.
What the records do not establish
Normative
- A numeric subscription price for either package.
- Offline data entry or synchronisation.
- Whether post-merger entitlements are shared, or how many hours of advice are included.
- That vendor-reported audit or SBTi success rates apply to you.
Persefoni
- An Advanced subscription amount, or which support rows each plan carries.
- Disconnected calculation or mobile capture, or a certificate behind the ISO/IEC 42001 badge.
- That the audit controls still marked as forthcoming exist in your account.
Neither product
- Which product is more accurate or cheaper for the same programme: no measurement or quote comparison was reviewed.
- That either export would be accepted by a particular assurance provider.
