    Where the two scopes differ

Both records describe measurement with traceability and a route to targets, so the comparison turns on how each vendor labels maturity. The Watershed record describes measurement, disclosure drafting, target and scenario planning, supplier engagement, optional AI agents and a marketplace for clean power and carbon removal. It notes that Product Footprints were a beta in a 2025 update, with general availability slated for 2026 (a product page now carries no beta label), and that the supplier workflow rests on a 2024 note. Persefoni's pages flag other items as coming soon: product-level footprints, physical climate-risk modelling and natural-language factor matching.

Lineage and checks are described in comparable terms. Watershed's measurement page cites automated cleaning, a count of built-in error checks and lineage for each figure, and a 2025 update describes viewing every transformation from ingestion to the final footprint and examining a single row. Persefoni's measurement page describes a transaction-level ledger with a formula and factor view for each result, and its AI page describes flagging statistical anomalies in large datasets. Both raise exceptions for a person to resolve; neither record shows how many flags a real file produces or how many are false.

Money and obligations enter differently. Watershed's materials describe a verification-support package and a guaranteed assurance programme for California's SB 253, limited to customers using standard methodologies who buy the package; the record asks you to confirm eligibility, scope and exclusions. Persefoni's plan comparison offers Net-Zero Navigator scenario modelling as an Advanced add-on and lists professional services as an add-on. Watershed's record found no pricing page on 26 September 2026, and a pricing address returned a not-found response, whereas Persefoni publishes a free plan. Neither record shows an enterprise or Advanced amount.

When each is the safer first demo

    Start with Watershed when

Watershed is the safer first demo when measurement must be traced for an auditor across several business units. Pick one purchased-goods line and one energy line, ask to see every transformation from source file to reported figure, and change a factor to see the effect on a closed period. Ask which features shown are generally available under your contract.

    Start with Persefoni when

Persefoni is the safer first demo when anomaly review and a ledger-style trail are the priority. Load a meter reading with a planted error and a duplicate row, and see whether an AI flag appears, who clears it and what the ledger then shows.

    A two-week evaluation plan

    Ask Watershed

    • Can software, implementation, supplier engagement, product footprints and verification support be quoted as separate lines in a named currency and term, given there is no price page?
    • What are the current terms of the SB 253 assurance programme, if relevant, and the security documents behind the trust page?

    Ask Persefoni

    • Which add-ons does the quote need, such as Net-Zero Navigator, metrics reports, concierge help or professional services, and what does each cost?
    • Are the calculation frequency, custom emission factors and approvals you need in the plan you would buy, since the comparison lists them as separate rows?

Week 1: load one mixed file in both: a utility bill, a fleet fuel record, supplier spend lines and two planted faults, a unit mistake and a duplicate. Count the faults stopped at upload, found later by an anomaly or error check, and missed. Ask how a flagged item is cleared and logged. Persefoni's free plan allows an immediate test; Watershed needs a vendor-run environment.

Week 2: have each product model one reduction, such as a switch of electricity supply or a supplier change, against your baseline, and show its assumptions. If the marketplace is quoted, ask Watershed to show a purchase record beside its footprint allocation; in Persefoni, ask to see Net-Zero Navigator as an add-on. Compare each scenario with your own spreadsheet and list every step that needed a separately contracted service.

    Worked evaluation scenarios

These scenarios are hypothetical. They show how to turn the record facts into a demo test and what outcome would change a choice; they are not case studies or customer results.

Hypothetical: a filer asking what an assurance package really covers

A company that expects to report under California's SB 253 wants help preparing for assurance. The Watershed record describes a programme limited to customers on standard methodologies who buy a verification-support package, with a fee waiver if assurance is not passed. The Persefoni pricing page lists a preview report for California's SB 253 covering Scope 1 and 2. Ask Watershed for the written terms, exclusions and eligibility test, and ask Persefoni whether a reviewer user can be created in your plan and what it shows. If your methodology is non-standard, or the reviewer cannot open calculation detail, the offer may not fit your case.

Hypothetical: a team that wants to buy clean power

A facilities team wants to buy renewable electricity and show the effect on its Scope 2 figure. The Watershed record describes a marketplace with purchase records and footprint allocation, while advising that vetting does not guarantee delivery or claim eligibility. The Persefoni plan comparison lists market-based Scope 2 accounting for renewable energy tracking, and the record describes no marketplace. Ask Watershed for the contract documents of one sample purchase, naming who holds title and retirement. Ask Persefoni how a certificate bought elsewhere is recorded and shown against the location-based figure. If purchase and footprint records sit in different tools, name who reconciles them.

Hypothetical: an analyst who will rely on AI help every day

An analyst expects to use an AI assistant daily to clean files and draft answers. The Watershed record describes agents for cleaning, formatting, analysis and drafting, with traceable data points and human review. The Persefoni record describes anomaly detection and an in-app assistant, with natural-language factor matching still labelled coming soon. Ask each vendor to produce an answer about one of your figures and show where its source can be opened. Then ask where customer data goes, whether it trains models, and whether the feature can be switched off by role. If an answer cannot be traced to a source, or the switch exists only at tenant level, note the control that your reviewers would need to add.

What the records do not establish

    Watershed

    • A price: the reviewed pages show no amount and no pricing page.
    • Offline or disconnected capture, calculation or review.
    • That the 2024 supplier workflow and the Product Footprints beta are in your contract.
    • That the assurance programme fits your footprint, or that marketplace projects deliver or support a claim.

    Persefoni

    • An Advanced subscription amount.
    • That product-level footprints and other coming-soon items are live in your account.
    • Disconnected capture or mobile use, or that an anomaly flag is accurate or complete.

    Neither product

    • Which product measures more accurately or reduces more: no measurement was reviewed.
    • That AI-drafted or AI-flagged output can skip human review, or that scenario results equal achieved savings.
