    BowTieXP

BowTieXP is the desktop authoring product in Wolters Kluwer's Enablon BowTieXP Suite. It structures hazards, threats, top events, consequences, escalation factors and preventive or mitigative barriers, with configurable attributes, risk matrices, responsibilities and supporting activities. Browser collaboration, operational control monitoring, incident investigation and safety-critical-control monitoring are separately scoped Suite capabilities; buyers should not infer them from the desktop diagram alone.

    Evidence: Researched profile

Built from vendor sources checked ; AI-assisted drafting. Documentation review, not a hands-on test. How pages are made

    Who is BowTieXP for?

Process-safety, operational-risk and barrier-management specialists who need governed bowtie authoring and clear risk communication. A populated or green barrier is a modeled assessment, not proof that a control is available or effective in the field. Define performance criteria, evidence freshness, accountable review and operational decision authority outside the diagram, and contract separately for any live monitoring or assurance workflow.

Shortlist BowTieXP when the primary need is specialist-led bowtie authoring, analysis and communication. If the desired outcome is multi-site governance, incident learning or live control assurance, require a separately priced architecture and end-to-end demonstration of the relevant Enterprise, IncidentXP or Safety Critical Controls workflow.

Bowtie scenario authoring and visualizationDocumented by vendor

The desktop product models hazards, threats, top events, consequences and preventive or mitigative barriers in a bowtie view. The software structures the analysis; qualified owners remain responsible for its completeness and validity.

Local desktop files and disconnected activationDepends on scope

Central browser repository and collaborationDepends on scope

Centralized storage, browser access, collaboration, dashboards and audit workflow are described for BowTieXP Enterprise, not as a desktop entitlement. Confirm named users, permissions, review states, history and hosting in the proposal.

Operational barrier performance monitoringDepends on scope

Enterprise and Suite pages describe monitoring barrier performance and linking controls to operational data. Availability, latency, status rules, data ownership and exception handling depend on the separately scoped deployment and integrations.

Platform integration and APIDepends on scope

Enterprise and Suite pages describe application or Enablon Vision integration, while release notes show that API and web capabilities are version-specific. Require an interface inventory, supported objects, authentication, error handling and data-freshness demonstration.

    Custom quote

On 26 September 2026 the Wolters Kluwer BowTieXP page linked "Request quote" to a BowTieXP Enterprise quote form and shows no amount; the former bowtiexp.com address redirects to the BowTieXP Suite page, which also shows no amount. Request the named desktop edition, licence arrangement, support and maintenance, training, report requirements and any Enterprise connection.

Pricing sources checked : Partially verified. Official desktop, Enterprise, incident, control-assurance, support, release and download pages were reviewed. Exact edition, modules, deployment, interfaces, maintenance, price and evaluation terms remain proposal questions.

Which product scope should the quote cover?

BowTieXP desktop authoring, analysis and edition-dependent reporting. BowTieXP Enterprise, IncidentXP, Safety Critical Controls, BowTieServer and Enablon Vision integrations require separate entitlement, deployment and version confirmation.

Ask the vendor to identify the product, region, modules, billing unit, contract term and included services in writing.

    Offline work and integrations

The official FAQ describes local desktop case files and group activation that can continue without network access. This supports a limited desktop use case only. Test activation, editing, attachments, reporting, backup and conflict handling in the exact proposed edition.

    Demo script

Governed desktop bowtie creation and revision

    1. Create a fictional hazard model with stable identifiers for threats, top event, consequences and preventive or mitigative barriers.
    2. Assign accountable roles, supporting activities and agreed barrier attributes, then apply the organization's risk matrix.
    3. Run a technical and operational-owner review that challenges missing scenarios, common-mode dependencies and the meaning of each effectiveness state.
    4. Approve the revision outside operational decision authority, export the required report and retain the previous model and review record.

Enterprise control evidence and exception handling

    1. Select one safety-critical control and define its performance standard, owner, evidence source, expected frequency and status rules.
    2. Collect an inspection finding or integrated operational datum in the separately scoped Enterprise or Safety Critical Controls workflow.
    3. Create a finding and action for missing, overdue or failed evidence without automatically declaring the barrier effective or ineffective.
    4. Have the accountable reviewer assess the evidence, record the decision and escalate any operational restriction through the organization's authorized process.

Incident investigation to controlled risk-model learning

    1. Create a fictional incident in the separately licensed incident solution and assemble evidence, timeline and relevant barrier observations.
    2. Apply the contracted investigation method and distinguish failed, missing, ineffective and unknown barriers.
    3. Link the investigation findings and actions to the relevant bowtie without silently overwriting its approved risk basis.
    4. Route the proposed model change through competent review, record acceptance or rejection and verify action closure independently.

Ask the vendor to show you

    1. Can we trace one barrier from threat or consequence through its performance criterion, owner, supporting activity, dated evidence and review decision?
    2. Which exact desktop edition, Enterprise modules, IncidentXP capabilities, Safety Critical Controls functions and integrations are included in the proposal?
    3. How does the configured status model distinguish modeled effectiveness, verified evidence, overdue assurance, impairment and unknown data?
    4. Can an incident finding propose a bowtie change without silently overwriting the approved risk model, and who approves that change?
    5. Which authoring, attachment, report, recovery and licensing steps work during a real network outage in the proposed desktop configuration?
    6. What versions, APIs, data objects, authentication methods, latency targets, error queues and ownership apply to each live evidence source?

    Questions the sources answer

Is BowTieXP the same scope as BowTieXP Enterprise?

No. BowTieXP is the desktop authoring product assessed here. The official material presents Enterprise as a separate browser-based, centralized collaboration and monitoring offering. Require the proposal to name each edition, module, hosting arrangement and user entitlement.
