    Sphera Control of Work

Sphera Control of Work coordinates hazardous work through permits, isolation planning and shift information. Evaluate the named modules against the plant operating model, including engineering drawings and dependencies between work activities. The separate Sphera Health and Safety Management profile does not establish these entitlements.

    Evidence: Researched profile

Built from vendor sources checked ; AI-assisted drafting. Documentation review, not a hands-on test. How pages are made

Who is Sphera Control of Work for?

Industrial operators with interdependent maintenance work, energy isolations and shift handovers. Scope every module, field workflow and interface explicitly. Current vendor evidence includes online/offline mobile permit execution and QR isolation verification in a specific 2026 mining implementation, not a suite-wide guarantee. Emergency Preparedness and Response, Dynamic Risk Pathways, barrier management and MDM for MRO are named scopes that may require separate licensing and implementation. Validate legacy migration, regulatory configuration and all hard stops against the site's approved procedures.

Worth evaluating when coordinated permits and isolations are material operational requirements. A simple checklist team should compare the full implementation cost with a narrower product; no savings or safety outcome has been independently measured here.

Barrier management is a named suite module. Confirm the selected model, incoming data and licensing instead of assuming it is included with permits.

    Process Safety Barrier Management
Emergency preparedness and permit-context handoffDepends on scope

The Emergency Preparedness and Response module presents response plans alongside current activities, process parameters and barrier status, and describes data exchange from permits into preparedness workflows. It is a named module, not proof of inclusion with Permit to Work; confirm response-plan ownership, data latency, degraded-mode access, drill support and interfaces in the quote.

Dynamic risk pathways and bowtie-informed visualizationDepends on scope

Dynamic Risk Pathways aggregates inspection, maintenance, operational, deviation and IoT data to visualize asset risk and safeguarding-barrier health against bowties, PHAs and other risk assessments. Treat it as separately scoped decision support: confirm source systems, mapping, data quality, update latency, alert thresholds, model governance and who approves interventions. Early-warning language is not a guarantee that incidents will be prevented.

Mobile online/offline permit execution and QR isolation checksDepends on scope

A 2026 Sphera mining case study documents one implementation with role-based access, QR-scanned isolation points, diagram-based isolation lists, a permit hard stop when referenced isolations were unconfirmed, and an online/offline mobile permitting workflow. This is deployment evidence, not a universal feature matrix or outcome guarantee. Reproduce each requested action, synchronization rule, hard stop and audit field in the proposed version and industry configuration.

Maintenance-work integration and risk-based schedulingDepends on scope

Sphera describes Control of Work across maintenance scheduling, execution and documentation, including a Risk-Based Scheduler for task conflicts, plus permit reuse and lessons learned. The Control of Work page gives ERP-generated permits from work orders as an integration example. Confirm the named ERP or EAM connector, work-order and permit ownership, supported fields, retry and reconciliation behavior, and whether Sphera MDM for MRO is a separate product in the proposed architecture.

Also watch for: Current offline transaction and approval coverage requires verification. Module licensing and legacy migration need a written scope.

Which product scope should the quote cover?

Sphera Control of Work within the Process Safety portfolio, including quoted Permit to Work, Isolation Management, Interactive P&ID, Operations Logbook and Shift Handover, and explicitly selected barrier, emergency-response or dynamic-risk modules. It is distinct from SpheraCloud Health and Safety Management, MDM for MRO, ESG reporting and LCA products unless those products and integrations appear in the proposal.

Ask the vendor to identify the product, region, modules, billing unit, contract term and included services in writing.

    Conditional online/offline mobile workflow

Sphera's 2026 mining case study documents one deployment completing its full mobile permitting workflow online or offline, with role-based controls, QR isolation confirmation and permit hard stops. Demonstrate cached scope, authentication, issue and suspension rules, signatures, competing edits, failed synchronization, isolation changes and final restoration on the quoted release.

    What we could not verify

    4 depend on scope · 4 notes

    Demo script

    Proposed isolation dependency exercise

    1. Model two maintenance jobs sharing an isolation point and assign separate responsible roles.
    2. Change one job stage and inspect the affected isolation status, permit dependencies and recorded authorization.
    3. Request a demonstration of rejected release and restoration attempts; agree expected behavior with the site procedure.

    Proposed disconnected handover exercise

    1. Prepare a representative shift with permits, drawings and unresolved work on the proposed field device.
    2. Disconnect, attempt permitted actions and record which functions remain available or become blocked.
    3. Reconnect and inspect competing edits, timestamps and the next shift view before accepting the offline scope.

Proposed ERP work order to offline permit and verified restoration exercise

    1. Create a representative maintenance work order in the buyer's ERP or EAM and show the exact fields, ownership and error handling used to create or prepopulate the permit.
    2. Run the job through risk-based scheduling, JHA or task risk assessment and SIMOPS conflict checks, then require the configured authorizations before issue.
    3. Verify each required isolation point with the proposed diagram and QR process, attempt issue with one point unconfirmed and inspect the actual hard-stop and audit behavior.
    4. Take the quoted field device offline, execute only the permitted steps, reconnect and inspect synchronization, competing edits, timestamps, final restoration authorization and the data written back to the maintenance system.

Ask the vendor to show you

    1. Which permit and isolation changes are allowed during loss of connectivity, and how are competing edits reconciled?
    2. Which modules and migration services are included in the written proposal?

    Checks specific to this product

    Mobile, offline and isolation-control boundary:
A vendor case study proves that one mining implementation used a full online/offline mobile workflow, QR isolation checks and permit hard stops. Do not generalize this to every module or deployment. Test device support, cached data, authentication expiry, competing edits, QR exceptions, failed sync, unconfirmed-isolation blocking and restoration authority against the buyer's procedure.
    Operational-data and model governance:
For Dynamic Risk Pathways and emergency response, inventory every source system and define ownership for bowties, barrier status, thresholds, response plans and stale or missing data. Validate how operators distinguish a software indication from an authorized operational decision.

    Questions the sources answer

Is Sphera Control of Work the same as Sphera Health and Safety Management?

They are distinct purchasing scopes in the same vendor portfolio. This profile covers operational work control; do not infer incident management, ESG or other portfolio entitlements from the shared brand.

Is Petrotechnics now Sphera Control of Work?

The 2019 acquisition and ORM for Operations announcement establish historical lineage. They do not establish a universal current Proscient alias, feature equivalence or automatic migration for a legacy installation. Obtain a deployment-specific roadmap.

Does Sphera Control of Work support offline permit approvals?

That end-to-end capability was not verified in the current pages reviewed. Mobile availability alone is insufficient evidence. Demonstrate each requested action and recovery conflict on the proposed version.

Can Sphera Control of Work integrate with SAP, Maximo or another maintenance system?

Sphera describes ERP integration that can generate permits from work orders, and its maintenance-lifecycle guidance discusses SAP and Maximo as common ERP or EAM contexts. This does not prove a delivered connector for a particular version. Require named interfaces, supported fields, authentication, ownership, retry and reconciliation behavior, and price them separately.

Are QR isolation checks and permit hard stops standard?

A 2026 Sphera mining case study documents QR-scanned isolation points, diagram-based isolation lists and automatic blocking when referenced isolations were not confirmed. That is evidence from one implementation, not proof of identical behavior in every deployment. Reproduce the rule, exception path and audit trail in the proposed configuration.

Are Emergency Preparedness and Dynamic Risk Pathways included with Permit to Work?

They are separately named modules in the Control of Work suite. Confirm licences, source systems, configuration, data latency and integration responsibilities rather than assuming suite visibility means entitlement.

Does Dynamic Risk Pathways replace operator judgment or an approved bowtie review?

No such replacement is established. The module uses operational and equipment data to visualize risk pathways and barrier conditions. Buyers should define model ownership, source-data quality, alert governance and the authorized human decision process.
